Presentation at the IP Scholars Conference @ the Cardozo
School of Law New York on Intellectual
Property Rights and Collaborative Innovation.
Innovation is the basis of value creation in business today and IP law plays a crucial and influential role in
driving innovation activities at both the strategic and operational levels of organisations. Innovation has evolved
from an activity based on building competitive advantage within a single organisation to leverging off collaborative
advantage in a rich ecosystem of partners, prosumers, competitors, and academia.
I will discuss the key strengths and weaknesses of existing IP law in the
context of collaborative innovation, and identify crucial areas of
opportunity and tension between sharing knowledge, promulgating innovation
and the management of intellectual rights in the quest to achieve
effective
collaborative advantage.
