A/Prof Toni Robertson Associate Professor , FIT

I have been working at UTS since the middle of 1999 when I was appointed as a specialist in Human-Computer Interaction.
My work here focuses on building an understanding of human practices, as situated, social activities, into technology design practices.

I am interested in issues surrounding the use of technology in actual work and social settings, including:

how an understanding of actual work practices can be developed and then used to design information systems that are usable and fit well with their situation of use;
participative approaches to, and methodologies for, the design of information systems;
human-computer interaction, interaction design and usability issues emerging from the development of new information technology particularly mobile and ubiquitous computing;
the use of computers and communications systems to support cooperative work and other social activities;
ethical issues in system design and the representation of work; and
how different metaphors for human cognition and work can affect the design of technology.

I am a member of the SocioTechnical Change Research Group of the UTS Institute for Information and Communications Technologies (IICT), the Dynamic Design Research Group and the Computer Human Interaction Special Interest Group (CHISIG) of the Ergonomics Society of Australia.

My focus on technology design continues an earlier career as an artist, print maker and graphic designer. I taught design and printmaking in universities, art schools and community arts programmes, while maintaining my own design studio and small business. My work is held in the major public collections in Australia and continues to be widely exhibited, reproduced and reviewed both in Australian and overseas.
